The working party on 20th May cleared the obstruction created by contractor’s brash last winter, so it is now possible to walk again between Justice Hill and the Yellow Trail. The gap frames one of the pollarded hornbeams.
Clear to go!
Trail camera
The Friends group has bought a trail camera to investigate wildlife activity in the wood. Here is one of the first results showing a fox.
First Bluebells of the spring
There’s a quiet spot in the wood where every year the bluebells appear before the mass in the rest of the wood.
A surprise along Middle Way
While walking along Middle Way on last week’s Friday work party, this slow worm appeared on the path. Also, we saw a Holly Blue butterfly there. While this is a common butterfly and is frequently seen in Cuffley’s domestic gardens, it is far less often noted in the Great Wood.

One year on…
Yes it’s been a while since this blog had any postings. Out this afternoon monitoring the butterflies: not as many as I’d hoped, but the following were seen: Orange Tip, Brimstone, Peacock and Speckled Wood.
There seemed to be quite a few Buzzards in the woods which were disturbed as I walked by. I suppose they wouldn’t be there if there wasn’t something edible nearby.

St Jude’s Storm 28th October 2013
This widely predicted storm caused plenty of work for the group, blocking many paths and leaving a good deal of clearing up which has taken up many of our recent work parties.
